Whether painting, coloring, or creating something new, each tutorial encourages kids to explore art in a way that feels fun, safe, and empowering.
Using a sponge, Adam applied white and blue paint to black paper with intentional, layered presses. The overlapping marks create a textured, cloud-like form, emphasizing contrast, softness, and the unique imprint of each touch.
One-Touch Masterpieces remove complexity by limiting movement to a single touch or motion. Artists dip a finger, sponge, or tool once at a time and place marks wherever they choose. Every mark is intentional and valid.

Adam made this Texture Story Board using cotton for clouds, yarn for lines and movement, and layered felt to create a flower.
He built it on a burlap base and arranged each material intentionally to show how texture and placement can tell a story without drawing.

Accessible for artists of all abilities
Encourages creativity without pressure or “right answers”
Supports sensory exploration and hands-on learning
Allows for self-expression without words
Every finished piece is personal and meaningful
Texture Story Boards are a creative way to tell a story using touch, color, and materials instead of drawing. Rather than focusing on making something “look right,” this activity invites artists to express ideas, emotions, or experiences through texture and placement.
Each piece is unique. There’s no wrong way to do it!
Cardboard or thick paper
Fabric, felt, yarn, foam, or textured paper
Glue or Velcro
Optional: paint, markers, or colored paper
All materials can be adapted based on sensory needs or motor ability.
1. Choose Your Materials
Pick textures that feel interesting or meaningful to you.
Some may feel soft, rough, smooth, or bumpy. All of that is part of the story.
2. Think About Your Story
Your story doesn’t have to be words or pictures.
It can represent:
how you’re feeling
a place you like
something that makes you calm or happy
a beginning, middle, and end
3. Start Building
Place your materials on the board in a way that feels right.
You can layer pieces, overlap textures, or space them apart.
4. Attach Your Pieces
Glue or stick everything down once you’re happy with the layout.
There’s no need to fix or change anything, your choices are part of the art!
5. Take a Moment to Look
When you’re finished, take a moment to look at what you created. You can give your artwork a name or simply enjoy how it feels.
